Ever since [ profile] hruggles mentioned it, I've been toying with the idea of going to October Crown. This would of course necessitate new garb, most likely of the 13th/14th century variety. So, when a friend of mine gave me 31yds of linen, in varying hues at 3yds or more each, my mind started working overtime. Now, I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge of medieval fashion is limited to what I learned in my History of Costume class, so I am by no means an expert here, but I do know what I like.
So, I think I'm going for a fitted dress, probably between 4 and 6 gores, with a cyclas over the top. Haven't decided on colours yet, depends on how much fabric the mock up takes, which I won't know until I actually make the pattern.

E also needs a new frock. Her pink faire frock still fits, I just need to let down the hem, but she nerds a new undergown. I'll most likely use the celery green linen, 'cause, you know, pink and green rock. For the pattern, I'm pretty sure I'll be using a Norse underdress pattern found at Looks very much like a T-tunic when done. (hruggles has made a couple, so I've seen the pattern in action.)

Before I get started on all these new projects though, I need to finish the paletot. The weather is cool enough in the mornings to be able to enjoy it, and it continues to glare at me from its spot on the dress form.

Leaving me with way too much to get done by Saturday. The to do list as it now stands:

8 wizard robes for small people 6 sewn
Add wand pockets on all 8
Apply Hogwarts badges to robes
Magic wands
Wizard robe for yours truly- just needs neck bound and sleeves. *shudder* (more details later)
Spell books (I'll get pics up tomorrow, they turned out so cute!)
Pinata- needs 2nd coat of paper mache(?sp)

I think I can, I think I can......

I got started on the wizard hat pinata. Not much right now, just a plain cardboard hat.

Looks more like a witch hat at the moment. I may cut the brim down a bit to make it look more wizardly.

E wants me to dress up too, so I'm kicking around ideas for a robe. I don't want to spend any money on it, so am thinking I'll use one of the green tablecloth left over from the Venetian. Haven't decided on a pattern. I'll either use the same method I used for the kids, (basically a t-smock with all the gores and gussets grafted on and more ease split up the middle.) or I'll make a simple yoke and pleat the front and back on. Whatever I decide, it needs to happen quickly, the party's next Saturday.

With all the time and energy I'm spending on this party!

Worked up a practice invite, although with the time it took for just the one, I'm going to use Ye-old-ink jet for them. But they must have the official seal.

So, here's what I came up with:

Really, my lettering is not all that fantastic anyway, I'm a bit out of practice. I will hand letter the envelopes though.

We're off to the fabric store tomorrow, for robe supplies. I'll try and get the invites printed tonight.

If only it were so easy! E and I just finished reading the Harry Potter books, and with her birthday comming up, I think you can probably guess where the party is headed. Like every child who has read the books before her, they have captured her imagination. Thus, we will ne spending the next 2 weeks planning a Harry Potter themed party.

As a parent who hates all the crap that come home in goody bags, I've decide not to do them. Instead we will be making Hogwarts robes and wands for all the kids. Yes, I am crazy. But the robes should be easy enough, and with my mom's help, I should be able to get them whipped out.

we started the wands yesterday...... )

Was feeling pretty good about myself on Tuesday night.  All those boning channels were finished, the pattern for E was scaled up, and by 10:pm it was sewn.
As I'm merrily stitching along, I think to myself, "Self, this looks a bit on the small side. "  But I ignore my better judgment and keep going.  The only thing I can say for myself, is at least I didn't put on the sleeve.
Come the next morning, I have E try on the mock-up.  She can get one arm thorough, barely, but the back was so narrow, it barely covered half of her back, and of course, there was no way on God's green earth the other arm was going through.

Here's where I went wrong..... )

*Mad cackle*  I have finished the boning channels! *more mad cackling*  Now to cut the bones, make the eyelets (why yes, I am a glutton for punishment!), bind and trim!  So good to finally be done with the never ending channels!

2 hours sewing tonight, and nothing to show for myself.  That isn't to say I've accomplished nothing today, just nothing tonight.  Earlier this afternoon, I sewed 6 boning channels on to the corset.  That just leaves the back 4, which I tried and failed to do tonight.  Why's that, you ask?  It's so simple, how could you fail?  Blame my ongoing war with the maths.  Simple addition was just out of my reach tonight. :/

I also put the question to E on what she'd like to wear.  She chose the 1877 Polonaise.  Not surprised there.  Also not surprised that she wants it to be pink and black.  Like mother like daughter.  So, I threw the pattern on to the projector, got it to the correct size, and traced it off.  10 minutes work in all.   All that's left to do is add s.a.and make a mock up.  As for the fabric, I'm thinking of a pink cotton twill, with black trim.  It'll have a bit of structure that way, and not cost me and arm and a leg.  Food for thought anyway.

Tomorrow being Easter, not sure how much, if anything I'll accomplish.  Guess i'll just have to wait and see.

My goal for today was to get the other sleeve lining sewn in on the paletot, and to do 2 boning channels on the corset.  I got the sleeve sewn in while at [ profile] hruggles  this afternoon, and I just finished sewing on 3, count 'em 3, boning channels.  That means I've got 11 out of 20 channels sewn, officially over the 1/2 way mark!
Of course, this brings thoughts of trim.... )

Lazy Day

After 3 days of non stop cleaning, I decided to take a lazy day today. Did nothing for as long as possible. As a result, I didn't get as much sewing done as I had planned. This doesn't mean I was entirely unproductive, and I do have pics to prove it. Not very good pics, coming from the mobile, but pics non the less.

I'm seriously loving the fit! (that's the first 2)
I've got the lining stitched down on one side, and pinned in the other. (that's the next 2)

Lastly, can you guess what E'S new sport is?

not so great pics here...... )

I had plans to spend yesterday embroidering my fingers to the bone, and D. was on board.  Unfortunately, I felt horrible, and spent the day in bed.  Bleh.
So far I've managed 18 of the 27 shamrocks on the first knee band for the drawers.

E just read her first real book!  "Green Eggs and Ham"!  Big deal, given her visual impairments!

Life has been way to crazy lately!  The semester is almost over, and I had to get two papers done.  One was relatively easy, a costume analysis of a movie or t.v. series.  As I'd already made a good start snarking "The Tudors", I decided to flesh it out a bit and go with that.  Turned that one in last week.

The other was a bit more difficult.  A short research paper on a non-western form of dress.  Being the queen of procrastination, I headed to the school library two weeks before it was due.  The only thing left in the costume section was Chinese, so, that's what I got.  Then of course, I waited until last Wednesday to actually get started on it.  Turned it in today, so the fingers are crossed.

Got a 97% on my last test.  Renaissance to the French Revolution. (Got a 99% on the first one, ancient Mesopotamia to Middle Ages.  Yes, I'm doing a little horn tooting.)  After the test, I overheard a couple of people talking about how hard the class is.  Now, I hate to be mean, but really?  Perhaps they just aren't that interested in the subject.  In that case, I wonder why they're even bothering to take the class.  So just one more test to go.

E had all of last week off, so we got to spend a lot of time together!  We went to gymnastics, the park, shopping, and the library.  And what did I find at the library?  A very awesome embroidery book!  So, of course, I decided to learn to embroider.  So far, so good I think.
What do you think so far? )

E News! )

E's class went on the most awesome field trip yesterday!  And I got to go with!
Safari West is a 400 acre wildlife preserve here in town.  You wouldn't think to find a full blown safari park in our little corner of California, but that's just what it is.  Their main mission is to help preserve endangered species.  They have over 100 different species of mammals, birds and reptiles.

E's teacher works at Safari West, so we got a little special treatment.  The school mascot is the cheetah, so look who they brought out to see us....
oodles of animal pics this way )Read more... )We had a great time, and learned a lot.  I'd love to go back and do the longer tour.  E had a great time, she can't stop talking about how the cheetah got their spots.

In sewing news, I have been busy, but I can't really talk about it.  I'll just say I've managed to make a skirt pattern, sew said skirt, and make a simple dress based on a T-smock in the last 4 days.  Still way to much to do on those before Friday.
I also need to get crackin' on E's halloween costume.

Thank you guys for your words of support, they really do mean a lot.  I wish I had time to thank you each personally.
It's been 8 days, and E is still sick.  We are going to have blood work done tomorrow, and hope they can tell us something.
As if E being sick and the death of my uncle were not enough, my mother in-law had to have emergency surgery to remove 3 feet of her small intestine late Sunday night.  This is especially bad, because her large one was removed years ago.  We aren't even allowed to go see her because she's in ICU and we have some unknown illness floating around our house.
If anything else goes wrong, I'm gonna scream!

y uncle passed away today.  I'm concerned for my aunt, and feel bad about not being able to be there for her.
E is still sick.  104 fever again.  The Dr.s keep saying it has to run its course.  Easy for them, it's not their child who's been miserable for 6 days!

E is Still sick!   Day 4 ended with a bang, and a ride in an ambulance!  We are now at the end of day 5.  After much needed sustenance, I'm headed for bed.
Here's hopping things are better tomorrow.

She now officially has a fever.  101.5.  She says missing school is "like eating stinky feet."  *chuckle*

I think.   She was sent home from school yesterday with a tummy ache.  About 2:00, she got a slight fever.  We went to the Dr.'s (it's becoming our regular Tuesday thing) but he didn't have an answer.  Though he did say it may be related to the heat?
No fever when she woke up this morning, but since she hadn't had anything to eat since lunch yesterday, I kept her home.  Now her temp is a bit elevated, and she says her tummy hurts again.  I hate not knowing what's going on, 'cause I have no way to fix it!
Sewing stuff:
We tried on the W&D bodice a second time.  I need to do some contouring at the neck line, it's way to gappy.  I'm hoping to do that tonight, depends on how the princess is feeling.
